Julia Gilbert is a development professional with a background predominantly in communication, coordination, and information management. Holding degrees in Classics and Creative Writing from the University of Paris (Sorbonne) and the University of East Anglia, Julia worked in multiple coordination and communication roles for Oxfam GB, and more briefly for Oxford University’s Global Economic Governance programme, before joining TPI in February 2014.
Julia has extensive experience at the intersection of communications, project management, and programme delivery, including research and evaluation. Other skills and interests include setting up and supporting systems and processes, information management, knowledge management, and coordination.
On humanitarian missions to Haiti after the earthquake in 2010, Ethiopia during the hunger crisis in 2011, and Mali during the civil war in 2012, Julia gained extensive experience in emergency response communications, coordination, planning, reporting, and information management. Working at headquarters and at field-level, she coordinated programme reporting for multiple Oxfam affiliates and partners in collaboration with globally distributed, culturally and professionally diverse teams.
At TPI, Julia’s role includes two main components: communications, and programme delivery. As Communications Manager, she is responsible for the organisation’s online presence, through our website, social media, newsletters, and publicity materials. As Programme Manager, she is involved in a range of programmes, from organisational evaluations to research. Additional areas of work include information and knowledge management, as well as setting up and standardising core business processes and systems.
Julia is passionate about the opportunities for cross-sector partnerships to strengthen international development in significant, sustainable and innovative ways. Her experience transitioning from a large, global aid and development organisation, to TPI’s smaller, versatile and highly flexible team, has provided an exciting and inspiring opportunity to apply her organisational knowledge in a new and innovative environment.
