Stuart Reid, Senior Advisor

Stuart was a co-founder of The Partnering Initiative and an active Associate and author for many years. He was a founding Director of the fully independent TPI in 2014 and sat on the TPI Board as a Trustee from 2014 to 2017.

After an initial academic career in the field of organisational behaviour, Stuart worked for ten years in the private sector as a management trainer and consultant. Returning to the University of Cambridge in 1994 as Senior Associate at the Judge Business School, he combined teaching and research with a continuing role in training and consultancy. In 1997, he joined the University of Cambridge Programme for Industry as a Senior Programme Manager, becoming Assistant Director of the department in 2000.

During this period at Cambridge, Stuart began working extensively in the then-emerging field of cross-sector partnership. In 1992 he was co-founder, with Ros Tennyson, of The Postgraduate Certificate in Cross-sector Partnership, the world’s first accredited programme for partnership practitioners. A year later, Ros and Stuart founded The Partnering Initiative and developed partnership training and evaluation services for a range of private, public and not-for-profit organisations. These included The World Bank, The UK Department of Education and Skills, the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme and a number of blue-chip corporations. Stuart also acted as Research Director of an early European Commission project on development partnerships in Southern Africa and has subsequently contributed to numerous publications, conferences and seminars on the subject of cross-sector partnerships and cross-cultural collaboration. A select bibliography of Stuart’s work is provided below with links to pdf copies of many of the key publications.

As a TPI Associate, Stuart has been particularly involved in strategic development and evaluation work with United Nations bodies. He worked on TPI’s evaluation of the co-leadership arrangement established between UNICEF and Save the Children and on UNESCO’s development of a partnership strategy. He was part of the cross-disciplinary team that evaluated the World Food Programme’s cross-sector partnerships, and subsequently authored the WFP’s internal guide ‘Top 10 Lessons: Working in Partnership’. Stuart has contributed to further TPI consultancy projects with WFP and with both of the other Rome-based agencies, IFAD and FAO. As part of the TPI team working on the development and analysis of platforms for partnership, Stuart was main author of two reports submitted to the UK Department of International Development, including the recent publication on Patforms for Partnership. Most recently, he is the author, for TPI, of the Partnering Agreement Scorecard and of The Partnership Culture Navigator.

Since 2007 Stuart has also worked regularly at the University of Warwick, being made an Associate Fellow of the university in 2008. In this capacity, he project-managed the final phase of the eChina-UK Programme, a study of a series of collaborations between UK and Chinese educational institutions. This led in 2009 to the launch of the Global People Resource Bank (www.globalpeople.org.uk), an on-line public access resource for practitioners running international partnerships, consisting of tools, guidance and research data. The Global People team has subsequently undertaken further projects applying the concepts and principles of this research to the creation of a tool for undergraduate development and for professional development in the international workplace.

Stuart has an M.A. from the University of Cambridge and a Doctorate in Professional Studies from the University of Middlesex. He is a member of the Cross-Sector Social Interaction network and a contributor to its symposia in Rotterdam (2012) and Boston (2014). His current professional interests focus on the processes of building cultures which support effective partnering and on the challenges of effective partnership evaluation.
