Advancing partnerships to support the SDGs in the Maldives

The aim of One Maldives is to inspire and catalyse a new era of collaboration in order to accelerate Maldives’ development and deliver the Sustainable Development Goals. Because of this vision, we are proud to have partnered with the Republic of Maldives, the United Nations Maldives Office, and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs to hold a partnering workshop on 2 November 2020.

The diverse group of participants were welcomed with opening remarks from His Excellency Mohamed Aslam, Minister of National Planning, Housing & Infrastructure, Republic of Maldives and Ms. Catherine Haswell, United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Maldives . This was followed by an introduction to partnerships for the SDGs by our Executive Director, Darian Stibbe and then additional presentations and practical exercises from different stakeholders in the country.

The sense of what needs to be done was shared by all participants, key insights about what needs to be done included:

Sectoral collaboration needs to be strengthened. All parties could come into a common platform to make meaningful partnerships in achieving SDGs. For example in order to achieve Zero Hunger, a single institution cannot work alone.

Need to have more frequent consultations and dialogue and get the views of people in the community, genuine efforts to put people at the center.

Need to build trust between government and private sector and other stakeholders.
